Position Description

Position: Employee Health & Wellness Nurse Coordinator


Under the direction of the Vice President of Human Resources or his/her designee and working within the license and scope of a Registered Nurse, collaborates with the Employee Health Physician and Infection Control Coordinator to conduct surveillance, treatment and monitoring of programs established to protect employees, volunteers, and contractors of Kern Medical from work related illness and injury. Researches, develops and implements programs to ensure employee wellness and workplace safety.

Essential Functions 

  • Coordinates and oversees all phases of the occupational health clinical program and employee wellness for the Kern County Hospital Authority (KCHA). 
  • Oversees the pre-employment and annual clearances of all health and safety screenings, including physicals, drug screens and laboratory results.
  • Provides oversight for the employee vaccination program. Reviews vaccine and other compliance requirements and determines whether vaccines are needed based on laboratory results. Assesses and attests to clinical competence of staff deemed appropriate and competent to administer vaccines and conduct mask fit testing as well as other clinical elements of licensed and non-licensed subordinates.
  • Coordinates follow-up of employee exposures to communicable diseases and carries out necessary treatment plans. Provides education on pathogen exposures
  • Provides initial assessment and treatment for first aid industrial injuries and illnesses in accordance with established standards. Reviews reports of industrial injury/illness according to established procedures. Coordinates with KCHA’s Risk Department to ensure timely processing of reports to minimize lost time on employee injuries and illnesses.

Employment Standards

  • Clear and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
  • Five (5) years of full-time nursing experience in an acute care setting with at least two (2) years of Employee Health and Wellness or Worker’s Compensation experience.
  • Certification as an Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) strongly preferred; may substitute other appropriate nursing specialty certification for OHN; certification in Ergonomics required, or must be obtained within six months of appointment
  • Master’s degree in nursing may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
  • Employee must maintain all health requirements designated by Kern Medical.
  • Possess and maintain a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basis Life Support (BLS).
